For a true taste of Mexican culture, check out the bullfights at Cancún’s Plaza de Toros. Inaugurated on December 20, 1989, the plaza has a maximum capacity of 5,500 spectators. It is the only bullfighting ring in the city and was recorded as having the most bullfights in the entire world in 1990, when more than 50 took place here. The bullfights are held at Plaza de Toro every Wednesday. And the afternoon always kicks off with a series of cultural performances that reflect various regions of Mexico, including flamenco dances, live mariachi music and shows put on by charros (Mexican cowboys). The cultural entertainment begins at 3:30 p.m. and lasts for about an hour. Afterward, violence and tradition come together in the bullfight, as the flashily dressed matador plays a game of life and death with the massive creature that could gore him at any moment. During the afternoon, there are also contests held that require audience participation. One of the particular favorites is a spectacle that involves playing soccer with a baby bull. After the fight is finished, there are various restaurants and bars located downstairs, where you can feast on traditional Mexican food, guzzle down a beer and be entertained by Mariachis who often stroll through the restaurants offering to play you a song
