Puerta Verde is an environmental conservation project formed by seven Mayan communities located in an ecological corridor located between two protected areas: Yum Balam and Otoch Ma0ax Yetel Kooh. These rural cooperatives have united in order to offer sustainable tourism to rescue their traditions and improve the quality of their lives.

Among the many tourist attactions they offer in northern Quintana Roo, is the amazing community of Nuevo Durango, where you can experience a full cultural encounter and visit marvelous caves and jungle.

The community has a population of only 200 and still maintain their Mayan customs. The local guides will take you though a breathtaking journey through the jungle to reach the entrance to the bowels of the earth to discover stunning caverns with stalactites and stalagmites that formed over the course of milenia. Nuevo Durango has three cave entrances with different difficulty levels, so spelunking fans or people in general can find something fascinating.

Also at Nuevo Durango is the "House of Insects" with a huge collection of critters from the region, as well as the "Pit of the Swallow" where thousands of these birds live and take off at dawn, making for an unforgettable spectacle.

Best of all, you will experience the expert local cuisine and even help with the making of an underground furnace.

Descubre un mundo subterráneo con Puerta Verde

Puerta Verde es un proyecto de conservación formado por siete comunidades mayas a lo largo de un corredor biológico entre dos áreas naturales protegidas: Yum Balam y Otoch Ma'ax Yetel Kooh. Este conjunto de cooperativas rurales pretende, a través de la prestación de servicios turísticos y el rescate de actividades tradicionales, mejorar su calidad de vida aprovechando de manera sustentable los recursos naturales y culturales.  

Entre las muchas atracciones que ofrecen en el norte de Quintana Roo, se encuentra la sorprendente comunidad de Nuevo Durango, en donde te puedes sumergir en la cultura local además de visitar la selva maya y unas increíbles cavernas.

Esta comunidad tiene una escasa publación de 200 habitantes, aún seguidores de las costumbres mayas. Desde este lugar, un guía local te llevará a través de la selva hasta la entrada a las entrañas de la tierra para que descubras las espectaculares cavernas con sus estalactitas y estalagmitas formadas en el curso de miles de años. Nuevo Durango tiene tres entradas con grados distintos de dificultad, volviendo la experiencia accesible a todos.

También en Nuevo Durango se encuentra la "Casa de los Insectos" con una enorme variedad de insectos de la región y el "Pozo de las Golodrina" de donde cada mañana surgen miles de estas aves, creando un espectáculo inolvidable.

Lo mejor de todo es que también podrás disfrutar la experta gastronomía local e incluso ayudar en la construcción de un horno bajo tierra.
