Famous for its bonefish, Punta Allen is also the access point to the beauties of Sian Ka'an

Tropical and lush Punta Allen lies 57km down a bumpy road at the tip of a peninsula in the Sian Ka'an Reserve. A longtime haunt of dedicated sport fishermen, the village is no longer as isolated as it once was. Tourists are pushing south along the access road; busloads troop in daily for 3hr. boat tours of the nearby lagunas. Still, when the last colectivo leaves and the electricity cuts out (which it does, sporadically, sometimes as early as six o'clock), Punta Allen remains a dot on the map where the best—and only—thing to do is admire the Milky Way.

Boat tours take visitors out to the lagunas and promise sightings of turtles, dolphins, lots of birds, and the occasional manatee. Solo travelers will probably be priced out, but they're doable with a group. A string of cooperativos organizes tours and set up along the beach. The tours usually include snorkeling and swimming

Often covered in an intimidating quantity of seaweed, Punta Allen's beaches are not ideal. Walking north along the beach leads eventually to the "Piscina Natural," an incredibly clear, aquamarine patch of water. South of town, the young and restless can stretch their legs by walking to the three look-out points near the Laguna Negro in the mangrove swamp, or make the 2km jaunt down to the lighthouse.

Pesca y aventura en Punta Allen

El pequeño pero hermoso pueblo de Punta Allen queda a 57 kilómetros de tramo a través de una carretera que parte de Tulum y llega hasta el límite de la Reserva de la Biósfer Sian Ka'an. Este sitio es un favorito desde hace décadas de fanáticos de la pesca con mosca. Aunque el pueblo ya no está tan aislado como antiguamente, sigue conservando una atmósfera remota, especialmente si se va la electricidad (como sucede esporádicamente).

Tours en bote llevan a los turistas hacia las bellas lagunas que son parte del atractivo de Sian Ka'an, y en donde se pueden admirar tortugas, delfines, muchas aves e incluso manatíes. Conviene ir en grupo para que el precio del tour salga más a cuenta. Los paseos generalmente incluyen esnorqueling y nado.

Como las playas de Punta Allen están a menudo cubiertas de algas, no son recomendables para nadar, pero caminando al norte se llega a la "Piscina Natural," un cuerpo de agua increíblemente claro. Al sur, los más aventureros puede dirigirse hacia tres miradores en Laguna Negra y admirar el manglar, o incluso animarse y realizar la excursión de 2 kilómetros hacia el faro.
