The municipality has a total extension of 647,33 km2; what represents 1,27 % of the state. It includes/understands the adjacent island of Cozumel, small barren islands and keys; in the continental zone to the CALICA facilities of and Ecological Park of Xel-Ha are located. The island has around 39 km in length and one average width of 12,8 km.
In all coast of the island sand beaches can be found white and the turquesa sea color of great beauty. Hotel zones exist as North Beach and the South Zone and is counted on several bath scattered in the coast.
Lagoon of Chankanab located to the south of the town is a water body communicated by an underground tunnel with the sea in where it can be observed, like in a natural aquarium the fauna and marine flora; around the lagoon a botanical garden with the representative vegetation of the region exists and in the coast that is approximately to 100 meters of the lagoon, coralíferos reefs exist and the submarine statue of a virgin.
It is catalogued like protected natural area. Xel-Ha Creek. Located in the peninsular zone, it constitutes a tourist center of exceptional beauty by the variety of flora and marine fauna that can be observed, in addition to the archaeological vestiges of the Mayan culture. The aquarium greater of the world can be considered natural. Account with stores, restaurants and a marine museum.

Imponente y hermosa, descansa la Isla de Golondrinas en el horizonte: Cozumel, bordeada de arrecifes coralinos que la convierten en uno de los sitios de buceo de mayor renombre en el mundo para los miles de buzos expertos y novatos que la visitan incansablemente año con año. Flota en el aire el perfume del pueblo caribeño mexicano, la sonrisa de sus mujeres y al andar de sus varones. Un malecón y pintorescas calles sin tiempo albergan hoteles, restaurantes y tiendas. Mientras que los amantes de la noche se preparan para perderse entre los destellos fulgurantes de los diversos bares.
El municipio tiene una extensión total de 647.33 km2; lo que representa el 1.27 % del estado. Comprende la isla de Cozumel, islotes y cayos adyacentes; en la zona continental se localizan las instalaciones de CALICA y el Parque Ecológico de Xel–Ha. La isla tiene alrededor de 39 Km. de largo y una anchura media de 12.8 km.
En todo el litoral de la isla se pueden encontrar playas de blanca arena y el mar color turquesa de gran belleza. Existen zonas hoteleras como Playa Norte y la Zona Sur y se cuenta con varios balnearios diseminados en el litoral. Laguna de Chankanab ubicada al sur del poblado es un cuerpo de agua comunicada por un túnel subterráneo con el mar en donde puede observarse, como en un acuario natural la fauna y flora marina; alrededor de la laguna existe un jardín botánico con la vegetación representativa de la región y en la costa que se encuentra aproximadamente a 100 metros de la laguna, existen arrecifes coralíferos y la estatua submarina de una virgen.
Está catalogado como área natural protegida. Caleta Xel-Ha. Situado en la zona peninsular, constituye un centro turístico de belleza excepcional por la variedad de flora y fauna marina que puede observarse, además de los vestigios arqueológicos de la cultura maya.
